End of the Year

WOW, time has FLOWN BY!! I apologize first and foremost for not updating this website as much as I could have. Things sure do get crazy at the end of the year!

I've had a blast getting to know and teach each and everyone of your children! This class is such a bright class and is full of personality and energy.
As we come to the end of the school year I wanted you to know that I am truly grateful for all the support in both the classroom and at home. Keep up the great work over the summer!

Our class has learned a lot these past couple weeks and has really matured. Look for pictures of Water Day coming next week! I'm sure we are going to have a TON of fun!

Butterflies

First we painted our eggs for spring!!
Then we released our butterflies into the "wild"! We were all very excited about watching them fly out of their home. After spending two weeks learning all about the life cycle of butterflies and how animals change and grow, this was the perfect ending to our unit!

We were excited to see them go.. Here we are waving goodbye to friendly butterflies!
Next week we start our unit on bean growth/plant growth and have a day of activities planned for Earth Day!

Sink or Float

This past Friday, our class participated in a science experiment as part of the school wide science fair. We chose our experiment to be on Sink or Float! We made prediction cards, and learned all about why certain objects would sink and others float.
We conducted our experiment using a piece of aluminum foil, pennies and a sponge. We made our predictions and observed what each object would do. It was lots of fun to see who's guess was right!!
Our science fair experiment will be on display for all of you to see in our classroom on Tuesday night at Open House. Open House will be from 5:30-7pm. We'd love to see all of you there!!!
We still have one more week left in Australia and the deep blue sea and then it's Spring Break. When we get back from spring break we're diving into spring and science! We'll be learning and observing the stages of a butterfly and growing our very own plants. We're even going to become scientists ourselves and keep a science log of what we observe each day!

Don't forget Wednesday, March 25 is our trip to Outback Steakhouse and Friday, March 27 is our Field Day! We have lots of fun and exciting things planned but we all still need to remember our school rules and be on our best behavior!

Dr. Seuss' Birthday Celebration

It wouldn't be a proper Dr. Seuss' Birthday Celebration without tasting our very own Green Eggs and Ham!!
After we read the story, we all got to try green eggs and ham. Most of us liked it... but there were some of us who didn't like it at all!!!
We read a lot of Dr. Seuss books and later created our very own animal character and wrote about it in our journals.
We also created Dr. Seuss, Cat in the Hat, hats using words from the "at" family. This is a word family we learned all about last week!
We had a lot of fun today learning about Dr. Seuss but the rest of the week we're back to learning about Famous Americans. This is our last week in our Famous Americans unit. This Friday we will be flying to Australia, where we will spend three weeks learning all about the culture and the deep sea!!

We're also learning about money and are learning a new money song to help us remember! Be sure to ask us about it!! :)

Valentine's Day Party

We had such a fun time during our Valentine's Day party! We all had been anticipating the party ALL day and were so excited when it finally was time! First we passed out our valentine's cards to our friends then it was time to eat!!!

We had cake, cupcakes, cookies, chips, candy, and strawberries!! Delicious!

We spent a lot of time getting ready for our Valentine's Day party and we're so glad that so many parents were able to join us. Thanks to all the parents who sent in items for the party, as well as valentine's cards, and to those who came.
This week we also continued learning about our solar system. We also learned a Planet Poem song that we love to sing in the mornings. The song helps us remember the planets in order! We also learned more about the sun being a star and how the moon changes form throughout the months. We've also started learning about numbers; counting by 5's, 10's, and 2's, as well as learning even and odd numbers.
We will be wrapping up our space unit this week and we'll be introduced to word families!
Can't wait to fly to space this week!

Japanese Tea Ceremony

A BIG thanks to all who helped with our phone book recycling contest by bringing in your old phone books. As a class we were able to collect a total of 215 phone books!!! As you can see the kids were REALLY excited! Even if we don't win, we will be having a pizza party to celebrate our teamwork.
This Friday we also had our Japanese Tea Ceremony. We've spent the past three weeks in Japan learning all about the culture and now we're on our way home! We celebrated by having our very own Tea Ceremony.
We learned that it is tradition in Japan to eat on pillows on the floor next to very low tables. Since we didn't have low tables or enough pillows to share, we used our great imaginations.
And since we all don't agree on liking sushi and hot tea, we compromised with Swedish Fish wrapped in Fruit Roll Ups and hot chocolate or apple juice.
We did learn to use our very own chopsticks though!! That was a lot of fun!
We had a great time in Japan and we learned a lot. Be sure to ask your child how to say the numbers 1-5 in Japanese...they know!!
We're now learning all about Space and our Solar System. We will be continuing this for the next week and a half ending with our 'trip to space' in two weeks!! :)
And as always if you would like to be a part of any of our Fun Fridays please come join us!! We will be having a Valentine's Day party next Friday from 10:15-11:00 and would LOVE to have you there! Just let us know if you will be joining us!!

100th Day of School

Check out our really cool 100 days of school art projects! We glued candy, pennies, stickers, used stamps and even sewed on buttons! We're a very creative class.
We had all kinds of 100 days of school projects. Above: We counted by 5's to 100 on our 100 number graph! Below: Here some of us are making our 100 days headbands! We counted by 10's and colored our school buses, then glued them on in order to make our headbands. We can all count to 100 and can all count by 1's, 5's, and 10's!!!!!!

Here we are with our 100 days of school headbands on!! Don't we look good? :)

We've learned so much the first 100 days of school and still have so much more to learn! This week we continued our Japan unit. We learned about carp fish, boys day, the Japanese flag, and volcanoes. We even got to erupt our very own volcano! Next week we're going to be getting ready to head home from Japan and we'll also start learning about space! We might even take a trip to the planets!
Thanks for the continued support and encouragement you give each of your children by reading to them! They're all learning so much!!

Art of the Sky

Above is our completed Art of the Sky Project!! Kate Sullivan Crocodile's Rock!!
This is our class waiting with our reading buddies (Mrs. Magee's 5th grade class) to be directed in where we were going to be in the big crocodile art.
Here we go... on our way to be placed inside the crocodile. We were part of the left front leg. Be sure to ask your child where they are. They know!!

Looking up. Anxiously awaiting for the countdown to take our picture. Just waiting on everyone else to get seated. We had so much fun coming together to create a large crocodile... our Kate Sullivan Crocodile! It was a once and a lifetime experience and we're all so glad we got to participate. Thanks for all who helped out and thank you to the parents for remembering to send your child to school with a gray shirt!!!

Japanese Dolls

We are having such a good time in Japan and we're learning so much! This week we learned about family life in Japan and where Japan is located on a globe compared to where we are!! Japan is REALLY far away! :)
We also got the chance to watch the Inauguration of our new President on Tuesday. We had a lot of fun learning about Martin Luther King Jr. also and why we have a whole day to celebrate such an extraordinary man.
These pictures are of us making our Japanese dolls out of toilet paper rolls, fabric and a popsicle stick. We learned on Friday that in Japan there's a whole day to celebrate girls. It's known as Girls Day and it's a day when Japanese girls make and display their porcelain dolls. There's celebrations and parades that go on throughout the day as well.
Next week we will have reached our 100th day and school and have a TON of fun activities we're going to do with the number 100. We also will be participating in the Art Of The Sky project at Kate Sullivan, where all 900 of our classmates and teachers will form a human made crocodile in the Coob Bowl right behind our school! Stay tuned next week for some really FUN photos!!

Our Trip to Japan

We left for Japan today!! We had so much fun. First we decorated our suitcases and then packed for our three week stay in Japan where we will learn TONS about life in Japan!

Above: We boarded our plane by signing our passports, getting them stamped for departure and then seated for our on-board video.
Below: Here we are watching "Big Bird Goes to Japan". We learned all kinds of information on Japan. Can't wait to learn more and tell you all about it!

I'm so excited about our "trip" to Japan and can't wait to spend three weeks learning all about he culture. Our Japan theme will also tie into our daily curriculum. We have a lot to learn these nine weeks and would love your extra help to ensure that each child succeeds. We're learning a lot about perseverance and setting and keeping goals and I will work as hard as I can to help each child succeed!

Don't forget to ask us about our trip and what we're learning! Maybe we can teach you something! :)

Winter Fun Friday

We love Fun Friday! Above is a picture of our 'Snowflake Initials' we made with white paint and a thread spool. We had fun stamping the first letter in our name.
Of course it wouldn't be Fun Friday if we didn't go outside and play with all the fun toys!

Above is a picture of some of us coloring during 'Free Choice Sign Up'. We enjoyed signing up for our favorite center after finishing all our work!

And this is a picture of some of us playing the Snowman Game! We had to roll dice to see what part of our snowman we could draw. The object was to be the first one done drawing their snowman!

This week was lots of fun getting used to the new routine. We have a lot of new rules and things to remember but we're well on our way!
We started our Winter Unit this week. We started learning all about winter weather and winter animals. We're also learning about locations in the World where there is a real winter.

We've started to read "Tacky The Penguin". This book is about a penguin who's different from all the others but at the end is the same and everyone realizes how special Tacky really is. Since we've started our Stick To It Unit in Reading we're learning a lot about character and what it is to have goals and always do our best!

Come back next week to see what else we've learned!!!

I hope that you'll check back frequently and as always feel free to contact me at anytime!
Thank you so much for your continued support and I can't wait to get the second half of the year started!
